Key Tax and Money Deadlines for 2026

The 2026 dates that carry a penalty or close a window for good — filing and estimated tax deadlines, contribution cutoffs, RMD dates, and the federal holidays that move settlement.

Most financial dates are soft. These are not: each one below either carries a penalty or closes a window that does not reopen. The second kind is the one people lose money to quietly, because nothing happens when you miss it — the contribution year simply ends.

Two distinctions are worth holding onto. An extension extends the time to file, never the time to pay. And prior-year IRA and HSA contributions run to the April filing deadline, while workplace retirement deferrals stop dead on December 31 — so the two most common retirement accounts have completely different last chances.

Deadlines with something at stake

Dates are for the 2026 calendar year and the 2025 and 2026 tax years. Where a deadline would fall on a weekend or federal holiday it moves to the next business day; none of the dates below required that adjustment.

The two December 31 traps

Both are permanent losses rather than penalties, which is why they attract so much less attention than the April deadline.

Workplace retirement contributions. The $24,500 employee deferral limit applies to money that goes through payroll during the calendar year. There is no catching up in April. If you are behind in November, the fix is raising the deferral percentage for the last pay periods, which many plans allow you to change online.

The employer match. Many plans match per pay period rather than annually, which means front-loading contributions early in the year and hitting the limit in September can forfeit the match on the remaining paychecks. Check whether your plan has a true-up provision before accelerating.

By contrast, IRA contributions up to $7,500 and HSA contributions up to $8,750 for family coverage can still be made for the prior year right up to the April filing deadline — and must be designated as prior-year contributions when you make them, or the custodian will apply them to the current year.

Federal holidays in 2026

Markets, banks, and the IRS are closed on these days. They matter for settlement timing, for when a transfer will actually land, and for which day a deadline rolls to.

Dates that are announced rather than fixed

October: Social Security COLA.The SSA announces the following year's cost-of-living adjustment and the new wage base in October. Any figure circulating before then is an estimate, however confidently it is presented.

Autumn: IRS inflation adjustments.Next year's brackets, standard deduction, and contribution limits are published in the autumn for the year ahead — which is why the 2026 figures on this site were verifiable in mid-2026 rather than needing to wait for the tax year to end.

Late January: the IRS opens filing. The exact date the IRS begins accepting returns is announced each year. Filing early is the main defense against someone else filing a fraudulent return using your Social Security number.

November to January: marketplace open enrollment. Health coverage enrollment windows are set by the federal marketplace and by individual states, several of which run longer. Outside the window you need a qualifying life event, which is a hard constraint for anyone planning to leave employment.
